Nearly two hundred and fifty law students, including many from the UDC School of Law, who are working in Washington, DC this summer, attended the Washington Council of Lawyers' Pathways to Postgraduate Legal Fellowships program on July 12, hosted by the Georgetown University Law Center. This is the second summer that the Washington Council of Lawyers (WCL) organized this program, to help students interested in public service and public sector employment learn about fellowship programs and other opportunities.

Dena Bauman, who is the director of the UDC School of Law Office of Career and Professional Development, and a board member of the Washington Council of Lawyers, helped institute the program in 2011. Ms. Bauman noted, "Washington is extremely well-situated for a program of this kind, as the seat of the federal government and home for so many public interest organizations. Given how many law students work in DC over the summer, we felt that this would be an excellent program to offer. We advertised the program to public interest law counselors across the country, as well as locally. We were delighted to have more than twice as many students attend this year."

This year’s featured panelists were Steve Grumm (Director of Public Interest Initiatives at NALP), Chinh Le (Legal Director at The Legal Aid Society of DC), Nita Mazumder (Program Manager of Law School Relations at Equal Justice Works), Tim McManus (Vice President, Education and Outreach, at the Partnership for Public Service), and Devi Rao (Skadden Fellow for Educational and Employment Opportunities at the National Women’s Law Center).

"The panelists she was able to bring to the program were outstanding speakers who offered a great depth of knowledge about fellowship programs,” said Nancy Lopez, Executive Director of the Washington Council of Lawyers. "Dena was the key component in making our outreach successful,” said Lopez.
