Human Trafficking Awareness Panel at UDC-DCSL

UDC-DCSL hosted the Human Trafficking Awareness Panel today to discuss human trafficking legal cases, bills pending in Congress to stop human trafficking, and tips for combating human trafficking.

Jennifer Blemur, 3L, gave a brief introduction of each panelist. Afterward, Audrey Roofeh, Program Specialist with the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at Polaris Project, discussed differences between sex trafficking and labor trafficking, human trafficking networks in the United States, and how traffickers are able to exploit their victims’ vulnerabilities. Professor Kristina Campbell, Director of the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic at UDC-DCSL, discussed driving around Virginia and Arizona to interview migrant workers who might be exploited by farm labor contractors. Jordan Kaye Terry, 2L, a Policy Manager for FAIR Fund and a former Law Enforcement Officer, discussed H.R. 2370: Strengthening the Child Welfare Response to Human Trafficking Act of 2011. The bill, introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), would help state child welfare agencies prevent human trafficking of children.
