Yahya Thabit

Yahya Thabit, 3L, interned this past summer as a Researcher and Writer for The Honorable Senior Judge Arthur Burnett, Sr. at the National African American Drug Policy Coalition (NAADPC) at Howard University School of Law.

As an intern for Judge Burnett, Sr., some of the tasks assigned to Yahya included an examination of Constitutional rights afforded to prisoners and an investigation into Section 1983 prisoner rights to medical care, which also included a study of prison medical malpractice cases. Yahya also conducted interesting research on a Bill signed by Florida's governor forcing welfare recipients to submit to drug tests including urine, blood, or hair samples before receiving welfare benefits. The research looked to challenge the law as a violation of the Fourth Amendment as an unreasonable intrusion of privacy of individuals and as an unlawful seizure of bodily fluids since the testing required under the new law would be requested without reasonable suspicion or probable cause.

Thabit says, "Judge Burnett, Sr. has been a mentor who has provided me with sound advice and given me his valuable time. The advantage of working with Judge Burnett, Sr. is that I report directly to a legend in the legal world who is committed to helping me further develop my skills.I am appreciative of the opportunity I have been provided and will continue to work with Judge Burnett, Sr. and the great cause that the NAADPC stands for. "

Thabit also won the Joseph L. Rauh Top Clinic Performer Scholarship for his work in the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic. Read, "Congratulations to Yahya Thabit, 3L, Winner of the Joseph L. Rauh Top Clinic Performer Scholarship.”
