The Back to School 2011 edition of PreLaw Magazine ranks UDC-DCSL #3 in the nation for clinical opportunities, behind Yale University (No. 1) and the University of Georgia (2) and just ahead of the University of Maryland (No. 7) and the City University of New York (No. 9).

Dean Katherine Broderick said, "Every student has hands-on legal practice experience as a comprehensive part of the requirement.” Dean Broderick added, "We specifically recruit students who want to be public interest, public service, and public policy lawyers.”

All students at UDC-DCSL are required to participate in legal clinics where they work on ongoing cases for clients under the supervision of an attorney-professor. During their second and third years, students provide 350 hours of clinical service to some of the District's most vulnerable residents including seniors, tenants, children with disabilities, and people with HIV/AIDS who could not otherwise afford representation.

"We have a terrific placement rate because students start in their very first year,” Dean Broderick said, referring to the School of Law's additional 40 hour community service requirement for first year law students. "They have real references from lawyers who’ve observed their work. Instead of saying ‘I think’ so and so, it’s ‘I’ve observed.’”

Using data from the Official Guide to ABA-approved law schools 2011 and 2012 editions, PreLaw Magazine ranked law schools in order of most clinical opportunities by dividing the total number of full-time clinical course positions offered into the number of full-time students.

In terms of total hours of required clinical and public interest work, UDC-DCSL students' 700 clinical hours and additional 40 hours of community service work easily lead the nation.
