The UDC Latino/a Law Students Association, under the leadership of UDC Law student Margarita Varela, successfully coordinated the first Puerto Rican Diaspora Summit held in Washington, D.C. The event took place at the UDC Ballroom Saturday and was sponsored by Center for Puerto Rican Studies, National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, Cenadores Puerto Rico, National Puerto Rican Agenda, Friends of Puerto Rico, 100 Days for Puerto Rico, and BoricuActívate.

This event was especially relevant given the destruction recently caused by Hurricanes Irma and María in Puerto Rico. In attendance were participants and community leaders from Florida, New York, California, Connecticut, and many other states. Varela provided opening remarks on behalf of the sponsoring organizations. Presenters participated in four panels and included Ana Marie Argilagos, Senior Advisor, Ford Foundation; Rodrigo Masses, President, Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association; Katie Thomas, Policy Advisor, Senator Bernie Sanders; and George Laws, Deputy Director, Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration.

The sessions included Katrina & Sandy: Lessons & Opportunities, Civil Society Response to a Humanitarian Crisis, Rebuilding & Economic Development Initiatives, and Legislative Strategies. Two Engagement Sessions followed the panels, in which participants planned actions for the diaspora to contribute to the rebuilding and economic development of the island. Following the summit on Sunday, the Puerto Rico Unity March drew thousands of demonstrators to the National Mall.

If you read Spanish, you can read more about the event in this article in El Nuevo Día, the newspaper with the highest circulation in Puerto Rico.
