Over the weekend, UDC Law Professor Philip Lee presented at Courageous Listening: Using Listening to Interrupt Implicit Bias, a professional development event held at Brookline High School by Brookline Education Foundation in Brookline, Massachusetts.

In his keynote titled “A Critical Race Theory Analysis of Educational Inequality,” Professor Lee traced the historical and legal context of school segregation from slavery to current issues of educational inequality. The talk focused on several landmark segregation cases, with Professor Lee suggesting critical race theory (CRT) can help educators talk and think about social justice work. Lee argued racial inequality in American education did not end with the decisions in the cases he presented, and while such legal decisions are important, they are not the only solution. Rather, he urged the educators in attendance to use critical race theory in their own social justice work toward providing high quality educational opportunities for all students.

Professor Lee has received the Outstanding Faculty Award at UDC Law for his work in courses such as Property, Constitutional Law, Torts, Education Law, and Race and the Law. As a member of the UDC Law faculty, Professor Lee maintains an active research and speaking profile, focusing on academic freedom, diversity and educational access, school law (K-12), higher education history and law, and property law and race.
