Congratulations to UDC Law LLM Candidate and Legislation Clinic Fellow Monica Bhattacharya, who organized a stellar panel for the National Organization for Women for the 2017 Forward Feminism Conference last week in Orlando.  UDC Law Professor Laurie Morin moderated the important discussion entitled "Casualties of the War on Drugs: The Mass Incarceration of Women in America -- Examining the Experiences of Incarcerated Women and Proposing Solutions."

The Panel covered:

  • Rates of increase in incarceration of women (as compared to men) and the relationship to the War on Drugs;
  • Impact on families, including visitation policies and difficulty of child bonding;
  • The common experience of trauma among incarcerated women and the lack of trauma-informed care;
  • Inadequate health care in carceral facilities;
  • Barriers to re-entry and recidivism.

Monica provided the national overview on each of these topics, and recruited the two fabulous panelists, Natalie Maxwell, an attorney with Florida Legal Services and Theasa Chavers, a graduate student at the University of Central Florida and active member of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.  They explored the issues from the state level, and from the perspective of a grassroots activist who has been personally impacted by the criminal justice system.

Prof. Morin  said, “We had a packed room for this session, and so many people wanted to speak with us afterwards. I was told by more than one person that it was the best breakout session they had attended at the conference,” and “I was proud to be associated with our law school, the LL.M. Program, and especially our fabulous Legislation Clinic fellow!”

Laurie and Monica hope to bring this discussion to the law school community in the fall.
