Washington, DCWe had a lot to celebrate at UDC David A. Clarke School of Law on Friday, April 29.  The festivities began at UDC's new LEED Student Center with a reception for alumni and a beautiful tribute to Professor and Antioch School of Law Co-founder, Edgar Cahn in honor of his 81st birthday. His son, Jonathan Cahn, presented a video with a rendition of the credo and photos highlighting Edgar’s inspiring life. Other speakers, including Legal Services Corporation President Jim Sandman, DC School of Law Founding Dean Bill Robinson and Dean Shelley Broderick offered touching words on Edgar’s impact on the community and everyone he meets. Not one to be outdone, President Barack Obama even sent a signed birthday letter to Edgar! (Cue mic drop.)

After everyone dried their tears, Professor John Brittain, Dean Shelley Broderick, and Director of Alumni Relations, Joe Libertelli, got the auction started by enthusiastically rattling off several big ticket items to the audience, while our silent auction (with just as many exciting items!) took place over the course of the night. All of the auction items were donated by faculty, alumni and friends of the law school and brought in a total of nearly $17,000 (with an additional $10,000 winning bid for a crab feast for 40 on September 11th at Board Chair Mike Rauh’s home).

The night wasn’t over yet and soon after the auction, local rock band – perhaps the only one in history ever to be made up of six judges and one psychologist – Deaf Dogs and the Indictments lead by front man Judge Russ Canaan, ’76 –  took the stage and did not disappoint with a collection of oldies that fall under the “impossible not to dance and sing along to” category. Dean Broderick gushed over the band serenading her with a rendition of “My Girl” calling it a highlight of not only her deanship, but her entire life.  Prof. Cahn said it was the first time he and his wife had hit the dance floor since their wedding!

Earlier that day, before the rocking and rolling began, we also held presentations highlighting the work that our several legal clinics do to help District of Columbia residents. The audience ranged from prospective students to alumni who were all captivated by the cases and clients that our students and professors work tirelessly and successfully to represent.  The experience students take away from clinic work is imperative to their future and to our community, and these presentations were a clear demonstration of this. The video collected will be used on the website and in Prof. Cahn's Law and Justice course.

Alumni dating back to the class of 1976 traveled from all over the country to honor Edgar and participate in our annual auction and reunion fundraiser. The proceeds of this event will go to the Rauh Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program which enables our students to spend their summers building expertise and making valuable, professional contacts while providing vital legal services to those who could otherwise not afford a lawyer.

We can’t thank everyone enough for their contributions – whether it was volunteering to help out, donating items for the auction, bidding on said auction items, giving donations during registration and at the door, or just helping us celebrate the brilliant past, present and future of the law school.
