Dean of Students, Annamaria Steward, has been elected President-Elect of Bar Association of the District of Columbia (BADC)
Dean Steward, will be the first African American woman president of the BADC, a 138 year old legal organization. She currently serves as BADC Treasurer. The following is from a letter of support sent out on behalf of Associate Dean Steward by Dean Shelley Broderick:

"Annamaria has been involved with the BADC for ten years. She began under the Chairmanship of Narda Newby, then Chair of the Young Lawyers Section (YLS), where she raised funds and helped bring the YLS financially into the black. Thereafter, she served as Director, Treasurer and Chair of the Young Lawyers Section. As Chair of the YLS, while Nick McConnell served as President of the BADC, she held 39 educational and social events in a nine month period while spending only $300 of the $7,000 budget. She also created a monthly Radio Law Clinic where residents of the District could obtain information on legal assistance programs. This clinic was so successful that it was not uncommon to receive 100 telephone calls seeking help during the hour long program.

After serving in nearly all positions of the YLS, Annamaria was elected to the Board of Directors of the BADC. She served as Director, Secretary, Treasurer-Elect and now serves as Treasurer. She created a television show, "D.C. Law... Today", featuring local attorneys, their contributions to the legal field and legal resources available to the public. She has also served the mandatory DC Bar, as past Secretary and current member of both the DC Bar Strategic Planning Committee and Publications Committee. In addition, she served as Secretary of the the Washington Bar Association, and is currently a member of its Judicial Selection and Evaluation Committee.

She is now Dean of Students at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law - and is doing a wonderful job here, I might add!

While I hate to add responsibilities to Annamaria's already-full plate, I'm confident that she would help the BADC grow by leaps and bounds. Her history with the organization, her connections with the mandatory Bar, and her relationship with future attorneys here at UDC will help BADC organization maintain its prominence and grow with new members."
