Washington, DC—Anna Oguntimein spent her time in law school advocating for immigrants’ rights. Now, after graduating from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) in 2015, she will continue her work in that field as an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow.

Oguntimein was selected to be part of this year’s class of 35 fellows who will assist immigrants in fighting deportation, incarceration and separation from their families. This class of fellows possess a wide range of backgrounds, including graduates of top-ranked law schools.

During her time at UDC-DCSL, Oguntimein worked in the Immigration Clinic, where she represented a client who had entered the country legally, but after over 30 years of residency he was facing deportation that would have separated him from his family. After thorough preparation on behalf of her client, the government's attorney essentially admitted they used inadmissible statements to bring the case against the client and the charges were dropped.

The prestigious fellowship, which is the first of its kind, was ‘inspired by Chief Judge Robert Katzmann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, IJC brings together the country’s most talented advocates, connects them to New York City’s best legal and community institutions, leverages the latest technologies, and fosters a culture of creative thinking that will produce new strategies to reduce the justice gap for immigrant families, ensuring that immigration status is no longer a barrier to social and economic opportunity,’ IJC’s website reads.

Oguntimein grew up in Maryland, where she founded a nonprofit organization that provides “Know Your Rights” workshops to immigrants and refugees.

The entire UDC-DCSL community congratulates her on her accomplishment!
