Washington, DC—The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) congratulates Annamaria Steward on her election as President-elect of the District of Columbia Bar. Steward is the third African-American woman elected to serve as president of the DC Bar, the second-largest unified bar association in the country.

Steward joined UDC-DCSL as Associate Dean of Students in 2008, bringing with her extraordinary legal talent, true professionalism and strong leadership.

“As president of the DC Bar, she will have a laser focus on engaging the powerful DC area law schools with the District of Columbia's exceptional cadre of legal services providers on a mission to close the justice gap,” Shelley Broderick, Dean of UDC-DCSL, said. “She’s committed to increasing access to justice for disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the District.”

At UDC-DCSL Steward manages student programs and activities from orientation through graduation, and coaches the law school's Oral Advocacy Team which competes in American Bar Association (ABA) and American Association for Justice competitions among countless other duties.

Over the years she has been actively involved in the DC Bar, most recently serving on the DC Bar’s Board of Governors. She was appointed to the executive committee in 2014. She also served as the first African-American woman president of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia in 139 years and has assumed various participatory and leadership positions with the National Bar Association, the Washington Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Steward assumes her new role on June 16.
