Traditionally at UDC-DCSL, as at all other law schools, first-year law students wait until November to meet with their career service professionals. This gives them time to acclimate to the rigors of their law school curriculum. This fall, our Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) began requiring that all first-year law students first attend an orientation session. OCPD designed these meetings to explain the its mission and function to students and help them begin the process of identifying, developing and reaching their professional goals over the next three or four years. OCPD also distributed its handbook with useful information on preparing cover letters, resumes, networking advice, etc.

On November 8, OCPD hosted Robin Robinson, senior attorney with the US Environmental Protection Agency during a lunchtime program. Ms. Robinson gave the students an overview of how to write an effective resume and cover letter, suggestions on using a writing sample, and interviewing tips. She came armed with many examples of what to do - and what not to do. On November 13, OCPD scheduled a late afternoon session targeting the evening students (although all students were welcome at both sessions). This panel featured the Honorable Gregory Jackson, Associate Judge on the District of Columbia Superior Court. Judge Jackson explained to students that now that they are in professional school, they must endeavor to meet higher expectations of themselves and of others. It is critical, he said, that students conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism at all times, including their relationships with staff and courtroom personnel. He also touched upon professional dress and use of social media. Most of our first-year students attended one of the meetings, and were demonstrably engaged and eager about embarking on their career paths. View photos from the panel featuring Judge Jackson below.
