Courtney Dixon '12 is now working for Brooklyn Defender Services. During her years at UDC-DCSL, Courtney was involved in two clinics. In the Juvenile and Special Education Clinic Courtney represented students, and parents of students, who had been denied their special education services by District of Columbia Public Schools. The second clinic that she participated in was the HIV/AIDS Legal Clinic. Courtney was faced with two groups of clients. One set of clients were individuals who were infected with or affected by HIV or AIDS. She represented these individuals in District of Columbia Superior Court in family planning issues such as custody and adoption. Her second set of clients were parents who were alleged to be neglectful or abusive to their children.

Prior to being hired at Brooklyn Defender Services, Courtney interned with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender in La Plata, MD. There she represented individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses in District Court. The experiences she garnered gave her a solid foundation and solidified her desire to become a public defender.
