On Oct. 3, 2019, UDC Law students, the Gender Justice Project (GJP) and United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) teamed up to submit a Joint Stakeholder Report on Gender Equity in Our Nation’s Capital [PDF] to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The report identifies five key areas in which women – especially women of color – lag behind on measures of economic security and personal liberty.

UDC Law students Christina Lee and Astha Tandon conducted research for the report as part of their Law & Justice community service hours. Students in the UDC Law Legislation Clinic, on behalf of UNA-NCA, also conducted research and helped edit the report.

“At a time of great prosperity in our nation’s capital, far too many women lack basic human rights to economic security, affordable housing and access to health care,” says Professor Laurie Morin, primary author of the report. “Women of color and LGBTQ individuals also experience gender-based violence and mass incarceration at alarmingly disproportionate rates.”

The Legislation Clinic will continue to represent UNA-NCA during the fall semester in advocacy before the D.C. Council. Students currently working on the project are 3Ls Rufus Akins-Atewogboye, Kalee Bacon, Keya Barron, Alexis Byrd, Nathaniel Clark, Sophia Iwuagwu, Mackenzie Kelly and Jeong Hwa Lee.
