On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, award winning documentary film maker Aviva Kempner, ’76, was honored as a Champion of Democracy by DC Vote, the 20 year old non-profit dedicated Statehood for the District of Columbia and full Congressional and Senate voting rights for its nearly 700,000 residents. DC Vote also honored Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, Baltimore Congressman Elijah Cummings and the late Rep. Ron Dellums of California.

A huge and enthusiastic crowd crammed into the Eaton Workshop Hotel to celebrate the honorees, whose virtues were extolled by DC Vote co-founder Daniel Solomon, (longtime DC School of Law Foundation Vice Chairperson), and former Rauh Professor of Public Interest Law, Wade Henderson, among others. Executive Director Bo Shuff described the work of DC Vote in and outside of the District.

UDC Law alumni spotted in the crowd included Ben Soto, ’93, Rema Wahabzadah, ’13 and Harrison Magy, ’14 - who was recruited to UDC Law by the honoree Aviva, herself!  DC School of Law Foundation Chair Jon Bouker, Arent Fox’s pro bono and public affairs partner, was also on hand, as was UDC grad and former Trustee Eugene D. Kinlow
