Reacting to the migrants traveling from various countries in Central America to the U.S. border, the UDC Latinx Law Students Association (LLSA), under the leadership of Flor Garay, ‘20, led a panel titled El Pueblo Sigue Luchando (The People Keep Fighting) in early November at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law).

The event began with the documentary “On the Road with the Migrant Caravan,” produced by The Guardian. The film discusses members’ struggles for shelter, food, water and security throughout Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. UDC Law alumna Liana Montecinos, ‘18, moderated the panel.

Immigrant rights community organizer and activist Roberto Juarez stated that nearly 3,500 people were escaping horrendous conditions in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Juarez was an organizer of the May 2018 Refugee Caravan led by Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Similarly, these people have endured heat, humidity, wind, rain and cold throughout their trek towards the United States border. “International and domestic laws protect people fleeing from their countries,” said UDC Law Immigration and Human Rights Clinic Co-Director Prof. Lindsay Harris.

Jose Fuentes, a volunteer attorney with Institute for Women in Migration, Alianza Americas and the National Lawyers Guild's Task Force on the Americas joined the event via telephone from Mexico City and described how U.S. attorneys are providing legal support and information to thousands of people walking towards the United States.

The LLSA-organized event was co-sponsored by American University and Howard University, with students and leaders from throughout the community gathering to learn more about the refugee exodus from Central America to the United States.
