On the weekend of October 12-14, 2018, more than 100 Antioch School of Law, DC School of Law, and UDC David A. Clarke School of Law alumni came together from across the nation with many flying in from the West Coast and one journeying all the way from Vietnam! Others came down from New England, up from Mississippi and Georgia and more.

Alums participated in one or more of our six events. The two Friday evening Happy Hours were well-attended and afforded an opportunity for some who were not able to participate in the Saturday and Sunday activities to catch up with at least some of their friends. This was particularly true for the all-classes Happy Hour at Right Proper Brewing Company (co-owned by the husband of alumna Rachel Lawrence, ’12) in Shaw, which was also attended by Dean Brittain and Professor Cahn. The Class of ’78 reunion began with a Friday night party at local criminal defense attorney Heather Shaner’s beautiful Dupont Circle home.

On Saturday morning, we were able to facilitate entry for 32 alumni and their guests to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Of course, the alums, many of whom spent the entire day there, were blown away by the experience. Thank you to alumna Dianne Wallace, ’14, owner of Monumental Travel, who facilitated the admission tickets!

Early Saturday afternoon, several members of the Class of ’78 met for an in-depth catch-up session in a seminar room. Later on, a larger group of alumni were treated to a stellar presentation on the UDC Law Clinical and Experiential programs. Thank you to our Master of Ceremonies, Matt Fraidin, Associate Dean for Clinical and Experiential Education, and to presenters Professor Faith Mullen of the General Practice Clinic; Professor Louise Howells of the Community Development Law Clinic; Professor Lauren Onkeles-Klein of the Juvenile and Special Education Clinic; Professor Marcy Karin of the Legislation Clinic; Heather Molina, ’07, of our Office of Career & Professional Development; Professor Ariel Waldman-Levinson of Tzedek DC; Professor Edgar Cahn who spoke on the Community Service Program; Professor Tom Devine,’80, of the Whistleblower Protection Clinic; and Immigration and Human Rights Clinic student Heather Kryzak. Acting Dean John Brittain also attended.

Saturday evening, more than 100 alumni and guests attended a reception and dinner in the UDC Student Center Ballroom. Music was provided by the David Rabin String Trio, food by Green Plate Catering (owned by the partner of alum Tom Devine, ‘80), and beer-tasting run by Rachel Lawrence, '12, and the Right Proper Brewing Company. All received great reviews. Dean Brittain made brief remarks, and Professor Cahn and his wife, our former student and professor, Chris Gray, were also in attendance. The Classes of ’78, ’83, and ’08 had particularly strong turn-outs.

On Sunday morning, the Class of 1978 came out again in full force to brunch at the District Kitchen where classmate Steve Millken, who had been out of town, was able to join them. Former longtime faculty member and Class of 1976 graduate Marinda Harpole joined us, as did Professor Cahn and several alums from other classes.

In terms of participation, the Classes of 2008 and 1978 were our stars with 24 and 25 alums, respectively - and many brought their spouses. The Classes of 1983, 1993 and 2003 had smaller groups and a couple dozen alumni from other classes also came out to reconnect.

We are putting out a call to all participants for their best photos, and will be editing and posting them in our 2018 Alumni Reunion album on Flickr. If you have one or more you’d like to share, please email them to Also, at the urging of Professor Cahn, we will be following up with the Class of 1978 to collect some of the best of their amazing and inspiring work and career stories.

Our next alumni reunion is already tentatively set for October 18-20, 2019. We hope to be able to finalize the date and begin organizing soon!
