Alum Dan Arshack, '83, right, helped assemble a pro bono legal and expert witness team that came together to help a Chesterfield, Virginia woman, Michelle Roberts, accused of self-aborting and burying her stillborn fetus.

"(Robert's defense attorney Pratt) Cook said the Virginia ACLU, which was highly critical of Chesterfield’s decision to pursue charges against Roberts, reached out to him to assist in her defense.

He said the civil rights organization put him in touch with high-profile New York attorney Daniel N. Arshack, whose clients have included James Holmes, who fatally shot 12 people and wounded 58 others in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre in 2012, and Alain Robert, the “French Spiderman” who had faced felony charges for scaling the New York Times Building in 2008.

Arshack said the work he did on Roberts’ behalf was as a consultant for the National Advocates for Pregnant Women.

“He’s the one that really tracked down these [expert] witnesses and got them to do this pro bono,” Cook explained."

As a result of this legal work and expert testimony, prosecutors dropped the case.
