One year after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, UDC Law Professor Rafael Cox Alomar is speaking with the media about the storm’s legacy and the island’s future.

Cox Alomar appeared on CNN en Español twice in the past month to discuss President Donald Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria and overall attitude toward Puerto Rico. In one segment (in Spanish), Cox Alomar addressed claims made by Omarosa Manigault Newman in her book Unhinged that suggest the president and Chief of Staff John Kelly used derogatory language when referring to Puerto Ricans. In the second clip (in Spanish), he spoke about Puerto Rican reaction to the ways in which President Trump has talked about Hurricane Maria’s death toll in the days leading up to Hurricane Florence’s landfall in the Carolinas.

This week, Cox Alomar offered his perspective in an editorial in The Boston Globe about Puerto Rico’s future. “There is an obvious colonial, and hence unacceptable, relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. The current arrangement is unacceptable.”
