WASHINGTON – In UDC Law’s first year of participation, Tijuana Barnes ’18 and Renee Mims ’18 placed second out of 24 teams in the brief writing portion of the Domenick Gabrielli Family Law Moot Court Competition. Held at Albany Law School March 1-3, the national contest featured 20 schools from around the U.S. competing in oral arguments and brief writing.

Asked why she chose to participate in this competition, Barnes noted the value of good legal writing skills. “I really believe (writing is) the foundation of what we do,” she said. “Because we have to constantly be in contact with the three Cs—court, client, and colleagues—about the law that governs what we do, the ability to properly articulate our messages gives us an advantage as advocates.”

Professors Faith Mullen, Saleema Snow and Aimee Saginaw serve as coaches for the UDC Law Moot Court Competition Team that also participated in this year’s D.C. Cup Moot Court Competition and the NBLSA Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition. Two students, Alicia Lewis ’18 and Denisha Jones ’18 will travel to New York for the NBLSA contest March 12-18, after winning the Mid-Atlantic Regional last month.
