Rickey Thorpe- by Lauren Burden, AP Tony Oppegard, '80, is a long-time Kentucky coal mine safety lawyer.  He introduces the June 30, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle article, "As Coal Dwindles, Mining States Trim Safety," in which he was quoted, thusly:

"Read this article about how RICKEY THORPE WAS CRUSHED TO DEATH in an underground mine operated by Alliance Coal Company in western Kentucky in 2015 because the company was too pathetic to follow basic safety guidelines. Despite outrageous mining deaths such as this, the Kentucky General Assembly this year cut back on the number of inspections that the Kentucky mine safety agency will conduct to keep miners safe. Most Kentucky legislators bought hook, line & sinker the ridiculous argument - which has been pushed by the Kentucky Coal Association for decades - that mining accidents are caused by the poor behavior of miners, and that behavior modification efforts are more effective than inspectors conducting inspections for safety violations. SHAME ON EVERY KENTUCKY LEGISLATOR WHO VOTED FOR THIS ANTI-SAFETY LAW WHICH PLACES KENTUCKY MINERS IN GREATER DANGER OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY. And RIP Rickey Thorpe."
