Professor Bauman co-directs the Externship Program, which she teaches with Professor William L. Robinson. Through the externship class, students earn academic credit for legal work at judicial, government and public interest placements. She directed the School of Law's Office of Career and Professional Development from 2003 to 2015.

Upon graduation from Cornell Law School, where she earned the Seymour Herzog Memorial Prize for her public interest advocacy, she joined the Monroe County Legal Assistance Corporation in Rochester, NY. At MCLAC, she represented low-income clients in state and federal court and created an award-winning community service project for the Monroe County Bar Association's Young Lawyer's Division.  Professor Bauman then moved to Poughkeepsie to serve as the managing attorney and pro bono director at Mid-Hudson Legal Services. In 1997, she moved to Washington to become a supervising attorney at D.C. Law Students in Court. Professor Bauman is a frequent presenter at NALP conferences and contributor to the NALP Bulletin; she also co-authored a chapter for NALP's Law School Guide to Public Interest Careers. Outside of school, she teaches adult Hebrew at Adas Israel, is active with the Bryn Mawr Club of Washington, D.C., and is an enthusiastic community gardener.
