Admission Policies

Admission Policy

UDC Law seeks to enroll academically qualified students who have demonstrated a commitment to public service. Because of UDC Law’s mission to admit and educate under-represented communities within the legal field, the Admission Committee reviews each application holistically and admits those they believe are capable of successfully completing the J.D. program and being admitted to the bar. Factors considered by the admission committee include LSAT scores, academic performance and GPA, writing samples, work experience, and recommendations that speak to the applicant’s professional promise, judgement, integrity, character, skills, and leadership potential.

Admission Determinations

Once an application has been marked as “Complete,” the admission committee typically renders a decision for admission within six to eight weeks. In some cases, an application will be held for ongoing consideration.

Character and Fitness

All applicants are required to answer character and fitness questions on the application. It is your responsibility to fully and completely answer these questions. Should you answer “yes” to any of the character and fitness questions on the application, you will need to attach a detailed addendum. In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contact the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Deferred Enrollment

UDC Law reviews deferral requests on a case-by-case basis. All deferral requests must be made in writing to lawadmission@udc.edu. Admitted students whose deferral requests are denied and who decline to attend after being admitted must reapply for admission the following application cycle. Typically, scholarship awards are not eligible for deferral.
