Lauren Onkeles-Klein
Visiting Assistant Professor of Law

Lauren Onkeles-Klein is a Visiting Professor and Director of the Juvenile and Special Education Law Clinic at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law.

Prior to joining the faculty at UDC in 2017, Professor Onkeles-Klein spent two years teaching in the Disability Rights Law Clinic at American University, Washington College of Law as a Practitioner-in-Residence. While at American, she taught Legal Ethics and allowed her scholarly interests to take her into areas related to access to education, metacognition, and clinical education.

From 2004 until 2015, Professor Onkeles-Klein worked in a medical legal partnership at DC’s Children’s Law Center. She litigated cases relating to access to education and special education, discipline, access to medical care, housing conditions, family law, and permanency for children in the abuse and neglect system. She also worked on policies, laws, and regulations to improve special education, increase language access for limited English proficient populations, and provide legislative protections for families receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. Professor Onkeles-Klein served as co-chair for D.C.’s Special Education Attorney Roundtable and as a member of the Advisory Board for Ayuda’s Community Legal Interpreter Bank. She also worked at the ABA’s Center on Children and the Law where she co-authored a publication for judges and attorneys to help improve outcomes for youth aging out of foster care.

Professor Onkeles-Klein is a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras where she worked on environmental protection and non-governmental organizations and on small business development.
