Birth of a Chapter
The University of the District of Columbia Law School joined Phi Alpha Delta as the Cahn Chapter in October 2002 at a ceremony held at the United States Capital Building.
Named for Jean Camper Cahn (1935-1991), the UDC-DCSL chapter emphasizes service and legal aid to the underprivileged. The Chapter's namesake was an important figure in the struggle for equal justice who dedicated her life to encouraging lawyers to serve the needs of the impoverished. Mrs. Cahn co-founded the Antioch Law School in Washington, DC with her husband Edgar Cahn in 1972. They developed a clinical program to help provide legal aid to needy people in the Nation's Capitol. The Antioch Law School later became the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke Law School (UDC-DCSL).

At the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year, representatives from the National Office of Phi Alpha Delta, Law Fraternity International, visited the UDC-DCSL campus to discuss starting a chapter at the school.
After seeking and receiving enthusiastic blessings and support from Professor Edgar Cahn, the members decided unanimously to name their chapter the Jean Camper Cahn Chapter. Mrs. Cahn's spirit, focus, dedication, and example made her a natural choice for the honor. Cahn was the ninth Law School Chapter in District XXIII which includes Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, DC.
