Former Deputy Attorney General George Terwilliger III '78, a partner in Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP's Washington, D.C, office, answered a few questions about his most challenging cases, practice areas in need of reform, attorneys that have impressed him, and mistakes made early in his career. Terwilliger says, "On one occasion as a young lawyer, in the midst of a hard-fought jury trial and facing an obstreperous attorney on the other side, I asked a question which was objected to as leading, which objection was sustained. I rephrased the question so as to be nonleading by use of a conventional phrase. It was again objected to and again sustained. I turned to the judge and sharply said, "But I said, 'Did there come a time ...' and the judge said, "And I said, 'Sustained!'” Being thus diminished in the eyes of the jury, I learned that many times it is better to give up a battle and remain focused on the objective of winning the war."
