Screen Justice: Film and Discussion Series

The Impact of Film and Video on Criminal Justice

Screen Justice Film Series presents a panel discussion with excerpts from relevant films: Does courtroom television deny a defendant's right to a fair trial? Can a film change the course of justice? Do media depictions of investigations effect criminal jury trials? Does the use of film and video in depositions and hearings affect those present?

Our distinguished panelists are: Dr. Monica Robbers, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, Marymount University; Debbie Kriegshauser, Chair of the Certified legal Video Specialists CLVS Council U.S.; and Chip Muller, Attorney, Hinckley, Allen & Snyder, LLP. Moderated by Professor Joseph B. Tulman, Clinical Director, UDC David A Clarke School of Law.

Screen Justice: Film and Discussion Series

Reckless Indifference

The 1996 death of Jimmy Farris in a ritzy Los Angeles suburb brought an energetic response from the local District Attorney. The resulting trial ended with sentences of life imprisonment without parole for all four surviving participants even though only one of the four actually committed the murder. The film questions the harsh sentences and asks whether the D.A. went full-throttle because of a series of failures (notably the O.J. Simpson debacle). The film received The International Press Academy's Golden Satellite Award for Outstanding Feature Documentary. (2000, 94 mins).

The film will be preceded by a Master Class with Academy Award nominated director William Gazecki from 5:00 - 5:45 pm. Seating for the class is limited. If you would like to attend please email devans-pritchardudc.edu.

The screening will be followed by Q&A with William Gazecki.

Death Penalty Awareness Week Forum

"A Broken System... Crying Out for Justice"
Our nation is the only industrialized country that still uses the death penalty. It incarcerates more of its population than any other nation in the world. In some states more money is spent on prisons than higher education. One out of three black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. Join the Campaign to End the Death Penalty to discuss what activists can do to fight against this criminal injustice system.

Featured Speakers:
BARBARA BECNEL: Author, journalist, friend and advocate of Stan Tookie Williams, who was executed by the state of California in December, 2005.
JAY NICKERSON: Capitol litigator and expert on lethal injection; longtime activist against the death penalty.

Girl Trouble
Girl Trouble is an intimate look at the compelling personal stories of three teenagers entangled in San Francisco's juvenile justice system. Trying to change their lives, the girls work part-time at the innovative Center for Young Women’s Development, an organization run by young women who have faced similar challenges. As the girls confront seemingly impossible problems and pivotal decisions, the Center’s 22-year-old executive director, Lateefah Simon, is often their only support and mentor.

Followed by Q&A with Joan Hurley of the Ioania R. Whipper Home and Robin Walker Sterling of the National Juvenile Defender Center.

Justice Louis D. Brandeis was universally regarded as one of the great champions of liberty, progress, and justice. A ferocious litigator with a deep sense of social justice, Brandeis was a pioneer. This film deftly weaves his complex personal life, his character and his achievements together to make a rich tapestry of a giant of US legal history.

In The Tall Grass
In the Tall Grass tells the story of Rwanda’s search for redemption after genocide as the country sits down to reckon with the horror in a network of informal, community courts called gacaca. With unprecedented access, In the Tall Grass explores universal themes of justice in post-conflict societies and the challenges countries like Rwanda face in attempting the transition from a violent past to peaceful future. Through the experiences of Joanita and Anastase, the film illustrate how the genocide and the ideology the propelled it continue to play a dangerous and destabilizing role in the country that if left unaddressed, threaten to one day plunge Rwanda back into chaos.
