On February 29th Professor Kemit Mawakana received the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) Black History Lecture Series Award. The award, presented by the William C. Pryor Chapter of the Black Law Students Association at the 3rd Annual Black History Lecture Series, is among the most prestigious awards that a law professor can receive. Professor Mawakana received the award for outstanding pedagogy and commitment, as well as for his mentorship and support of UDC’s BLSA.

Upon receiving the award Prof. Mawakana said, "I am deeply appreciative and honored as the recipient of this award. When one receives recognition from their community that is the most precious. After all, society at-large is not in the business of rewarding African-American citizens for extraordinary positive efforts towards other African-Americans. I hope that future recipients exceed my accomplishments and continue building pipelines to the future.”

This year D.C. Magistrate Judge Karen A. Howze spoke to BLSA on "Building Pipelines for the Future.” Past speakers include Judge Inez Smith Reid in 2010 and NAACP Attorney General Kim Keenan in 2011. Past winners include Assistant Dean of Admission Vivian Canty in 2010 and Professor John Brittain in 2011.

The Black Law Students Association is an organization dedicated to facilitating community service to the global community as well as providing excellent opportunities for black student attorneys. The event was created by BLSA chapter president Jackie Odia ’10 in 2010.
