Don Padou '11 is organizing a high-profile debate this Saturday at
Catholic University for the candidates looking to replace D.C.
Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. (D-Ward 5), who resigned last month before
pleading guilty to felony theft charges. Shelly Gardner, another '11
alum, is one of the candidates looking to replace Harry Thomas Jr. in
the special election.
Though there are more then 12 candidates looking to replace Harry Thomas
Jr., only 5 of the candidates will appear at the debate. In TheWashington Post Padou said a smaller, more lively event is in the ward’s best interest: "We
decided we wanted a debate, not a forum, and a debate only works if you
limit the number of candidates.”
The debate is being sponsored by Brookland Heartbeat, a community
newsletter, and the D.C. chapter of the League of Women Voters. WTOP
radio's Mark Segraves will be moderating.
