On September 22, 2011, the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will present Professor Robert L. Burgdorf, Jr. with their da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award for his body of work as a disability rights advocate and, in the words of the organization’s President, his "incredible and longstanding work on the Americans with Disabilities Act.” The da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, is a special award that is bestowed on individuals who have dedicated their careers to resolving issues faced by people with disabilities.

The da Vinci Awards were created in 2000 when longtime Multiple Sclerosis Society volunteer and physicist Michael Rokosz brought the Engineering Society of Detroit together with the Michigan Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society to establish this national award program. Most of the da Vinci Awards are given for innovative developments and research in adaptive and assistive technology, and the nominees come from a number of countries and represent a range of sciences, technologies, and industries.
