UDC Law is nationally known for its diversity, but few realize that this diversity extends to politics. However, this week in particular, our politically diverse alumni have been very much in the news!

Though not mentioned by name, on Monday, January 22, Justice Kevin M. Dougherty, ’87, a Democrat, was making national news as a member of the 4 to 3 majority of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court which struck down the state’s heavily gerrymandered congressional districts. See the coverage in the Washington Post and in Rolling Stone Magazine.

On Tuesday, January 23, Virginia State Senator, William M. Stanley, Jr., ‘94, a Republican, was making news as a result of his successful advocacy of a rural hospital in Southwest Virginia district, which was supported by new Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.  See coverage in the Washington Post.

And on Friday, January 26, Phil Stinson, '92, was mentioned in a Washington Post story on the killing of Bijan Ghaisar, the unarmed 25 year old accountant.  (Phil was a leader in the DC School of Law Federalist Society, but has, by his own description, greatly moderated his views in subsequent years!)
