On Wednesday, the National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families released a report stating at least one quarter of Latino children in the United States have an undocumented parent, placing nearly 5 million kids at risk of seeing a parent deported. In a Youth Today piece about the report, UDC Law Professor and Co-Director of the Immigration & Human Rights Clinic Lindsay M. Harris cited nearly 600,000 immigration cases backlogged in the courts as a major part of the continued fear and uncertainty for these young people. Harris explained the slow pace of removal proceeding—some cases span years—means “mixed-status families will continue to exist and likely rise in number.” Read the full article here.

In addition to running the Immigration & Human Rights Clinic, Professor Harris is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), currently serving as Vice-Chair of the AILA National Asylum and Refugee Committee. Harris is frequently invited to speak on asylee integration, gender-based and gang-based asylum claims, the detention of immigrant families, the use of experts in asylum cases, public interest legal careers, and clinical legal education.

UDC’s Immigration & Human Rights Clinic, directed by Harris and Professor Kristina Campbell and assisted by Clinical Instructor Saba Ahmed, primarily represents immigrants in removal proceedings in immigration court at present. The DC Superior Court recently selected the Clinic as one of the 2017 recipients of the CORO Award in recognition of service to the Latino community.
