On Monday, September 25, Tzedek DC hosted the 2017 Celebrity Chef Kugel Cook-Off at the new University of the District of Columbia Student Center Ballroom. The event featured four area chefs vying for the title of best kugel recipe, including Kyle Bailey of The Salt Line, Mike Friedman of The Red Hen and All Purpose, Danny Lee of Mandu and Chiko, and Alex Levin of the Schlow Restaurant Group.

Guests of the event got to sample each kugel recipe, but it was up to a panel of four guest judges to decide the 2017 winner. The judges awarded the top prize to Levin, but each chef presented a unique take on the classic Jewish dish. The panel tasked with choosing the top kugel dish featured familiar faces, including former UDC Law Associate Dean (now DC Bar Director of Leadership and Strategic Development) Annamaria Steward as well as CNN political analyst David Gregory, Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell founding partner Marna Tucker, and cookbook author and journalist Joan Nathan. Bonnie Benwick, Deputy Food Editor for The Washington Post, served as Honorary Chair for the event, alongside Co-Chairs Courtney Weiner, June Kress, and Laura Kumin.

Proceeds from the cook-off will support Tzedek DC in their work assisting low-income D.C. residents with debt-related legal issues. Founded and directed by Ariel Levinson-Waldman, Tzedek DC is a new organization located at the David A. Clarke School of Law. Levinson-Waldman and his staff work closely with UDC Law students in serving Tzedek’s mission.
