Washington, DCIt started as a side project but developed into back-channel dealings that brought an end to nearly 50 years of strained relations between the US and Cuba.

The man at the center of it all was Tim Rieser, '79, a staffer for Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

On Sunday, 60 Minutes sat down with Rieser, Sen. Leahy and Alan Gross—an American prisoner in Cuba for more than five years. Rieser's work secured Gross' release and helped restore diplomatic ties between the two countries.
