DC People's Counsel Sandra Mattavous-Frye, '83, pictured at left with Mike Ewall, '12, of the Energy Justice Network, received a vigorous round of applause on Tuesday, August 25th when she arrived at the PowerDC celebration of the DC Public Service Commission's decision to deny the Exelon corporation's request to take over PEPCO, the District's electricity distribution utility.

Mattavous-Frye had long vehemently opposed the takeover on a variety of public interest grounds. In a Washington Post article on Wednesday, August 26th, she was quoted in opposition to any reconsideration, "I am not amenable to any settlement.  The train is certainly out of the depot."

See the Post story HERE - and note its curious placement - an historic victory by a coalition of public interest organizations against a multi-billion dollar corporation on a multi-billion-dollar deal was "buried" on page A-12.  Also curious was the Post's tone - indicating that a reconsideration was likely, and its misleading failure to note that all of the 26 DC Advisory Neighborhood Commissions that made comment did so in opposition to the acquisition.

We should note that Maryland People's Counsel, Paula Carmody, '80, had also worked assiduously against this merger.

Photos from the PowerDC celebration, which was attended by three past presidents of the UDC-DCSL Environmental Law Society, Chris Connelly, '15, Adam Arnold, '14 and Mike Ewall, can be found on Flickr HERE.
