The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law congratulates supervising attorney Sarah Bardos ’12, and Matthew Kaplan and John Lui, both ’16, of the Housing and Consumer Law Clinic on their recent courtroom victory.
Bardos, Kaplan and Lui, with assistance from, Sean Brown, ’14, Alex Reed, ’15, Savas Georges, ’15, Randle Wilson, ’15, and Alfredo Luxardo, ’15, represented a fast food restaurant worker, who had been sued for negligent driving by a large national insurance company.
On May 18, 2015, after a weeklong trial, the jury returned a verdict in favor of their client. The insurance company was seeking over $65,000 in damages, but the jurors not only found that the actions of other motorist involved were negligent (thereby contributing to the accident), but also found that our client was not negligent at all!
The opposing attorney “wins” a substantial number of his cases because the people he sues do not show up, either out of fear of the legal process or because they do not understand that they have meritorious defenses. In this case, our client decided to fight back, but without the initial assistance of the Legal Aid Society and the help, support, and hard work from the Housing & Consumer Law Clinic, she most likely would have been forced into an unfair settlement.
Practicing law, promoting justice, and changing lives indeed!
