UDC Law Organizes 28th Annual Robert M. Cover Public Interest Law Retreat

The University of the District of Columbia – David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law) is the proud organizing school for the 28th Annual Robert M. Cover Public Interest Law Retreat (Cover Retreat). The Cover Retreat runs from February 27 – March 1, 2015 and takes place in Peterborough, NH, at the Sargent Center campsite.

“I am excited to be organizing the Cover Retreat this year and represent UDC Law’s fervent commitment to public interest law,” said Dara A. Gold, the 2015 student organizer and part time 3L at the school.  “I loved the sense of community among fellow public interest law-minded individuals. I made amazing friends last year and I cannot wait to see them again. I am counting down the days until the 2015 Retreat begins!”

This year’s theme is “Social Movement Lawyering.”

UDC Law is sending 21 students to the Cover Retreat this year. The students represent a group of engaged law students active in both the UDC Law and greater District of Columbia community. These students are active in UDC Law’s National Lawyers Guild (NLG), American Constitution Society (ACS), Latino/a Law Student Association (LLSA), and the International Human Rights Law Student Association (IHRLA). The student delegation comprises of both full time and part time students.

The law students at UDC have been participating in the Cover Retreat for almost a decade and have loved the discussions, public interest law environment, and networking opportunities that arise.

"The Cover Retreat showed that there are more public interest oriented law students who all have similar goals as my classmates. It was nice to take a break from my law school life to share experiences, learn about the complexities of practicing public interest law, and befriend other future social changers. There are a lot of good people here,” Sébastien Monzón Rueda, a2L and LLSA President, said. Monzón had the opportunity to attend the Cover Retreat last year.

Merancia Noelsaint, a 1L, is also thrilled to be attending the Cover Retreat this year.

“I am looking forward to networking and collaborating with other professionals who share the enthusiasm for public interest law legal issues,” Noelsaint said.

UDC Law Professor John Brittain, civil and human rights attorney, is a regular faculty participant.

"As a veteran of many years at the Cover Retreat, the essence to me is the geographic seclusion of the New Hampshire campsite surrounded by a winter wonderland of snow,” Brittain said. “The setting includes several meeting rooms with wood burning fireplaces, which provides a perfect opportunity for progressive minded law students, practitioners, and academics to discuss how to use law as a means of social change."

Shelley Broderick, Dean of UDC Law, is attending and will be presenting at the Cover Retreat this year.

The Cover Retreat brings public interest law students, practitioners, faculty, and scholars together in the pursuit of public interest. The Cover Retreat reflects the values and goals of UDC Law - to use the law, “[T]o help those in need and reshape our community, [country, and world.]”

Attending the Cover Retreat has vastly expanded the intellectual horizons and network of UDC Law students with students and attorneys across the nation.  The Cover Retreat reinvigorates and cements students’ desire to pursue a career in public interest law.

The 28th Annual Cover Retreat is sponsored by Yale Law School and the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT).
