On March 22, 2014, over 130 prospective law students attended the School of Law's Spring Law Day program. (story & video links below)
After a welcome by Dean Shelley Broderick, Professor Tom Mack introduced those in attendance to the Socratic Method - a major staple of law school teaching and learning.
Following Professor Mack, School of Law Student Bar Association President Robert Newman moderated a panel discussion on life during and after law school with two other current law students - Jino Ray and Matt Kaplan - and three recent graduates: Keri Nash, Yahya Thabit, and Megan Challender.
After a brief lunch attended by several additional faculty members including Professors Susan Waysdorf, Phil Lee, LaShanda Taylor Adams and Andrew Ferguson, Professor Deb Cohen led a session on How to Prepare for Law School, which was followed by Question and Answer sessions with Financial Aid Director and Assistant Director Mose Cartier and Ebony Hart.
The final session on the Admission process was conducted by Assistant Dean Vivian Canty, who yielded the floor back to Dean Broderick who, in turn, introduced special guest, Congressman John Conyers, a longtime supporter of the School of Law who was in the building for a Forum on Full Employment immediately after Law Day. The Congressman lauded the School, urged prospective students to pursue public interest legal careers, and invited all to the Forum. At least twenty participants did return with him to the Moot Court Room for a stimulating discussion that included NAACP DC Director Hilary Shelton, and Reverend Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus with moderation services provided by Garland Nixon of DC's Pacifica Radio affiliate, WPFW and national Fox News (quite a combination there, actually!)
If you weren't able to make it to Law Day, well, we hope you'll come to the next one! But, meanwhile, the next best thing to having been there is to view the video segments below.
Thus, and forthwith (lawyers don't actually say that, by the way...) the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law is pleased to present video of our Spring 2014 Law Day Open House program.
