On December 5, 2013, before a wonderfully diverse crowd that included alumni spanning the generations, Professor Edgar S. Cahn received the Neil Alexander Humanitarian Award, the DC Commission on Human Rights' highest honor which was the highlight of a program entitled "Honoring our Past, Changing the Present, and Building Our Legacy for Tomorrow"

After an introduction by DC Commission on Human Rights Chair, Nikechi Taifa, Dr. Cahn started by admitting unease at his assigned role of talking about the past, explaining that, as all of those who knew him could attest, he lives mainly in the future!  After describing a bit about the beginnings of the federal Legal Services Corporation, the Antioch School of Law, Time Banking, and the DC Youth Court, he went into inspiring detail about the Time Banking movement and its potentially decisive role in enlisting the powers of those we seek to help to help others and themselves and to build community.

While Dr. Cahn was speaking, DC Mayor Vincent Gray arrived and listened.  At the conclusion of Dr. Cahn's remarks, Mayor Gray made the award presentation and then proceeded to share his thoughts - which he had prepared as an introduction - about his long experience with Edgar and with Antioch School of Law attorneys who assisted in the closure of the Forest Haven mental health facility while the mayor was the Director of the DC Association for Retarded Citizens.  The Mayor also acknowledged his "good friend" School of Law Dean Shelley Broderick in the audience and cited her and the School of Law for continued excellence.
