The Community Development Law Clinic (CDLC) works to preserve affordable housing and support charitable organizations in the District of Columbia. In fall 2012, the CDLC helped a client, a limited equity housing cooperative, to avoid tax foreclosure and negotiated a payment from the client’s property manager to the client. The payment reimbursed the client for fees and interest arising from the late payment of property taxes to the Office of Tax and Revenue. The CDLC asserted the responsibility of the property manager to pay property taxes in a timely manner and requested the reimbursement after reviewing the management agreement between the client and the property manager. As a result of the CDLC’s advocacy, the client saved over $3,500.
