Professor Andrew Ferguson was quoted in Arizona Central on predictive policing, a new law enforcement strategy to reduce crime by using sophisticated computer algorithms to predict criminal activity before it happens.

Professor Ferguson "said he’s not too familiar with risk terrain modeling, but he cautioned that 'predictive policing' could weaken Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures if police, judges and prosecutors treat the information as infallible.

Police must still have reasonable suspicion, Ferguson said, meaning they cannot arbitrarily stop people on the street simply because a computer algorithm said the street is in a possible high-crime area."
