Karen Forman, Associate Dean of Public Interest, Clinical and Graduate Programs, and Vanita Saleema Snow, Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development served on The DC Pro Bono Week Committee, compromised of area non-profit providers, law school representatives, and law firm pro bono coordinators. Events planned for DC Pro Bono Week included a poverty simulation and a Know Your Rights Consumer Credit Information program, which served as a community service event for many DCSL first-year law students. The poverty simulation attracted attorneys from both law firms and the legal services community, including Jim Sandman, Legal Services Corporation President. Participants navigated through a maze of slum landlords, predatory check-cashing establishments, and various social service agencies to simulate the complexities related with living in poverty. The event is designed to help the DC legal community identify the barriers low-income clients confront and how lawyers can help alleviate some of those barriers.
