Criminal Justice Society

Mission Statement

The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law Criminal Justice Society is a nonpartisan organization whose members are from diverse backgrounds and with different career goals interested in both criminal defense and criminal prosecution and share a common interest in the way society deals with crime, the criminal and the victim. The Society is dedicated to providing a forum for its members and the Law School at large to explore current discourse, issues, and interests in different areas of criminal law, including career and opportunities.

The purposes of the CJS is to promote and encourage criminal law dialogue, practice, policy, and scholarship, to foster awareness of the criminal's constitutional rights, to develop a strong relationship with the criminal law bar, to explore issues unique to the ever-changing field of criminal law, such as criminal prosecution, criminal defense, criminal investigation, and presentation of evidence at a criminal trial, to provide opportunities for students to network with professionals and other students and experience the different perspectives of those within the criminal law arena, and to provide resources and support for those interested in pursuing a career in criminal law.

CJS will accomplish its mission and fulfill its purpose by:
  • Promoting exploration and discussion about the field of criminal law
  • Creating opportunities for students interested in criminal law by hosting speakers (including practitioners, judges, law enforcement officers, prosecutors and members of community organizations)
  • Conducting networking events
  • Organizing field trips to prisons and trials
  • Providing career services programs
  • Engaging in volunteer community service
  • Participating in ride-alongs with various law enforcement departments in the District of Columbia
  • Collaborating with other student organizations committed to criminal justice issues and concerns
